Struggling with his dual identity, failed comedian Arthur Fleck meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital. Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleason and director-screenwriter Todd Phillips say what scared them most about working on the musical sequel. The subtitle of the film “Folie a Deux” means “The Madness of Two” in French. Initially, this led to speculations about the appearance of Harley Quinn in the film, which were soon confirmed.

The name Folie a Deux comes from the French psychiatrists of the 19th century, Charles Lasseg and Jules Falret. This term was coined to describe two or more people who share the same insanity or delusion. The foreman of the jury speaks of “the people of New York” instead of Gotham City. That’s because New York State is the plaintiff in the criminal case, and this version of Gotham City is apparently in New York State (most versions place Gotham in New Jersey)..

It feels more like a spin-off than a true sequel, spending most of its time retelling the original through court walls and interviews rather than moving the story forward. The script is patchy at best, often relying on thin threads to loosely connect one musical dream sequence to another. Lady Gaga, on the other hand, seemed to deliberately tone down her usual brightness, probably so as not to overshadow it, which, while understandable, seems like a missed opportunity for a more dynamic performance. The musical numbers, full of energy and spectacle, are easily recognized as the highlight of the film, and the singing and dancing offer moments of respite from the sluggish narrative.
Unfortunately, these sequences cannot support the dynamics of the film
The lack of a substantial plot makes the film seem too long, dragging on for more than two hours, which makes it seem unnecessarily stretched. Without the exciting psychological tension of its predecessor, the film finds its basis with difficulty, turning into an excessively indulgent example of musical theater rather than a coherent, exciting continuation of the story.
